Actigall (ursodeoxycholic acid) contains a type of bile acid produced by the liver, which is secreted in bile. As a treatment, the medication inhibits absorption of cholesterol during digestion and inhibits cholesterol production by the liver, which reduces the amount of cholesterol in the bile. As such, it is effective at:

  • Preventing cholesterol gallstones from forming during rapid weight loss;
  • Dissolving existing cholesterol gallstones as an alternative to surgery;
  • Treating symptoms of primary biliary cirrhosis.

Note that medication is only effective in very specific scenarios; for example, it will not help prevent or dissolve gallstones composed of pigment. Patients should not buy Actigall for undiagnosed conditions.

What to Expect from Treatment

Dosage varies, of course, depending on the condition being treated, the severity of the condition, and other factors such as overall patient health, patient response to treatment, or other medications being taken. In otherwise healthy adults, dosage is typically based on weight:

  • To dissolve gallstones - 8 to 10 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) of weight. The daily dose should be divided into two or more smaller doses as needed so that no single dose exceeds 300 mg. Divided doses should be taken as evenly apart as possible.
  • To manage primary biliary cirrhosis - 13 to 15 mg per kg of weight. Again the total daily dose should be divided so that no single dose exceeds 300 mg, spread as evenly apart as possible.
  • To prevent gallstones - typically 300 mg taken twice daily, for a total of 600 mg per day.
  • In general, a single dose should not exceed 300 mg unless explicitly prescribed by a doctor, to minimize the risk of side effects.
  • Tablets may be split if needed to achieve the correct dose, but split tablets will likely taste very unpleasant. Storing excess split tablets with whole tablets may cause whole tablets to taste unpleasant as well.
  • Each dose should be taken with food and a full glass of fluid.

Duration of treatment is also variable:

  • In primary biliary cirrhosis the medication may be taken indefinitely as long as it is effective.
  • In gallstone prevention Actigall is typically taken for as long as rapid weight loss occurs, or until it is determined to be ineffective.
  • To dissolve gallstones, it is typically taken for at least one year. Progress should be monitored every six months; there should be clear evidence that gallstones are dissolving by the 12th month of treatment, at which time treatment should continue for as long as necessary to completely dissolve the stones. If there are not improvements by month 12 the medication is unlikely to work and treatment will usually be stopped.

In all cases regular doctor checkups are encouraged to ensure the medication is working properly. Some individuals simply don't respond to treatment with Actigall and will need to explore other options.

Actigall may interact with a variety of other medications, which may reduce effectiveness or exacerbate side effects. Speak with a doctor or pharmacist about the particular combination of medications being taken if unsure of safety.
